Swappin' Manhattans - Two Movies and a Book

Watched Igby Goes Down on friday night. It was somehow really funny and really depressing. I think that when it was funny, I really enjoyed it, and when it was [trying to be] depressing, I really was not affected much by it.

Then last night watched 25th Hour. Someone once told me this was one of the best responses to the events of September 11th, 2001 that he had seen. In many ways, I was inclined to agree. Not only did it portray the events in a less exploitative manner (in more of a way that someone who was really affected by those events would have, not in a way that someone who wanted to make a buck by associtating themselves to such a tragedy would have), but it brought it all down to what really happened on that fateful day: That no one can take away the things we hold precious - it is all our to waste if we squander what we love and what makes us special. On one hand it could be by involving ourselves in underhanded dealings with foreign groups that blows up in our faces and leaves us going to jail, or it could be by involving ourselves in underhanded dealings with foreign groups that blows up in our faces and leaves us with thousands dead and a shaken nation. No matter how many people we want to say "fuck you" to, all we can do is look ourselves straight in the eye and say "No man, fuck you."

And further progress is being made on The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. So far this is the second source that has said [essentially] "Comic book characters are created from the fears, weaknesses, dreams, and fantasies of their creators." Eh, maybe this is a too braod generalization (in that you could say any character is based on those aspects of their creator) but it rings especially true here. I feel like there is going to be a healthy dose of tragedy before this one is over, but I'm looking forward to the tale.

Oh, and I saw Secondhand Lions. It was good and wholesome, not without corniness or being a little cheezy, but it worked. Oh, but that Haley Joe Osmond kid - I just cant stand that little shit. Stop making your voice crack on purpose - it ain't cute!

"Ah, bang bang bang bang. Ah-whoo-hoo..."
